1 Application

 

Ni-Cd aircraft battery is used as the boarding standby power supply for the airplanes. In case of breakdown, it can start the engine directly and provide 24V DC power. The battery can be stored at the teerature of -55 °C 〜+60 °C for a short period, and after being charged at 25°C±10°C, the battery can be operated in high altitude of 18000m (11.1852mile) , supplying power at the teerature of -10°C 〜+50°C.

 

2 Construction and electrochemical processes

 

2. 1 Construction

 

The battery is consisted of 20 sintered Ni-Cd cells which are connected in series by nickel plating linlcers and they are mounted in a stainless steel case which has a rigid construction and high mechanical strength. There is special electrical equipment outside the case in convenience of linldng with the electrical connector on the airplane. It can assure flying safe and reliable.

 

A single cell is consisted, of positive and negative electrodes, separator, terminal post5 cell container and cover. Heat platewelding technique is used for sealing. The electrolyte is KOH solution with a density of 1.25g/cm3 (78 lb/ft3) (includes 30g/L

(1.8721b/ft3 )LiOH). An operating vent plug is in the cover. The polarities are identified by a red and a blue plastic washer relatively.

2. 2 Electrochemical processes

 

The Ni-Cd batteiy has a positive electrode made of nickel hydroxide coound as active material while a negative electrode is of cadmium coound. Potassium hydroxide solution is used as its electrolyte. During charge and discharge process, the following reactions take place:

In the overall reaction above, it is clearly teen that the water is releasing during charge and absorbing during discharge. So the electrolyte level has changes all the time.

It—means the, battery nominal capacity. So 0.5 ItA is equal to 0.5x ItA. Take 20GNC40 as an. exale, the nominal capacity is 40A, then 0.5 ItA is 20A.
